At our art classes for kids in North Brunswick, NJ, this month was extra sweet—literally!
Inspired by artists, hands-on exploration, and lots of imagination, our students created everything from cake sculptures and tie-dye pieces to bold collages and playful creatures.

Here’s a peek into what our students explored in the studio this month:

Little Explorers (Ages 3–5)

Our youngest artists explored art through play, movement, and hands-on discovery—building confidence while experimenting with new materials and ideas.

✂️ Matisse-Inspired Cutouts & Sculptures

We introduced our students to artist Henri Matisse and his beautiful cut-paper collages. After reading Henry’s Scissors, we learned how Matisse “painted with scissors.”

The children practiced cutting shapes and created their own colorful collages. In some classes, they even turned their work into 3D standing sculptures, bringing their creations to life in a whole new way.

Kandinsky & Geometric Exploration

Inspired by Kandinsky, students explored lines, circles, and geometric shapes.

They used rulers, tape, and everyday objects (even muffin trays!) to stamp and trace shapes—experimenting freely and creating expressive, abstract compositions.

🐛 Caterpillars, Ladybugs & Bees

Our little artists loved working with clay—creating caterpillars and building small environments using sand and grass.

We also explored ladybugs and bees, observing their patterns and details. Using paint and collage materials, the students created their own insect artworks, full of texture and personality.

🍩 Young Artists (Ages 6–9)

Our 6–9 year olds worked on sculpture, drawing, and creative problem-solving through fun, engaging projects.

🍰 Wayne Thiebaud-Inspired Cake Sculptures

Inspired by American artist Wayne Thiebaud, students created cake sculptures using cardboard and plaster.

They designed cake slices, built stands, and carefully painted every detail. The best part? Adding icing, decorations, and a cherry on top. These cakes came out looking so real—and so yummy!

🍩 Clay Donuts (Student Favorite!)

For our final class, the students requested to make clay donuts—and of course, we said yes!

They shaped, painted, and decorated their donuts with bright colors, drizzles, and sprinkles. A fun and joyful way to end the month.

Wayne Thiebaud-Inspired Cake Paintings

Our older students explored Wayne Thiebaud’s iconic cake paintings, focusing on how he uses thick paint to create texture that looks almost edible.

Using oil pastels on canvas, each student designed their own cake—full of personality, color, and thoughtful details. Every piece was unique and full of character.
